on windows 7, can i change where all my downloads go to?
when i download something it goes to a far off folder i cant get to without a zip program, im looking for a way to make everything i download, download into the desktop or folder of my choice.

You don't say what browser you are using and if you are using a download manager. These choices make a lot of difference to what happens to downloads. As you do not give any such details I will offer the best generic information. I will start with Windows 7 defaults with the included browser [IE]
By default Windows 7 with Internet Explorer will place all downloads into the C:\Users\Your Usernamel\Downloads
location. This folder may not be the most convenient for you but it is easy to navigate to and certainly doesn't require any Zip program to access. If you want to download to another folder you can set this easily. When you click on a download [remember this is with Windows 7 inbuilt downloader and using IE] the first window that appears says "Do you want to run or save this file"
you have the choice buttons below to choose run, save or cancel. Assuming you want to save the file, when clicking save a new explorer window will open up. This window allows you to choose the name for your download and the location you wish to save it to.
It's very straightforward.
If you are using a different browser eg Chrome then the default folder for downloads is still the same as with IE, namely C:\Users\Your Usernamel\Downloads
Firefox and other popular browsers [I can't possibly give details for all here] all save downloads to default folders but they can be changed.
From what you describe in your question I cannot tell what browser you are using but I know of no windows browser that requires you run a zip process to access the download location, that doesn't make any sense. Obviously if the file you are downloading is in Zip format then you must Unzip it after you have saved it to your hard drive to access the files within.
There are countless download managers that run on Windows 7 and all of them allow differing amounts of customisation when it comes to choosing where your saved download files go.
For instance the popular Free Download Manager [FDM] allows you set a single download location for all files or to set up a different location depending on the type of file downloaded, amongst its settings. So you can store all .exe downloads in one location of your choice, choose another location for .zip downloads and yet another default location for .pdf downloads if you want to.
But again, as you give no information in your question about using a download manager I can't really understand what your problem is.
If you follow the information I have covered above then you should be able to choose where your downloads end up whatever combination of browser and/or download manager you use.

Usually there is the option to save where downloads go to & most people chose for it to go to the Downloads folder. That's where I did it.

This has nothing to do with W 7. Just change your web browser's settings to ALWAYS download to the Desktop.
In Firefox, it's under the Tools TAB > Options, under the General TAB.
For Internet Explorer, it's under the Tools TAB > Internet Options.
