For years my friend Kelly has been saying that hating me is like hating a puppy. All this time I've thought it was a nice thing but now I'm like.... what? what about people who hate dogs?

Even people who hate dogs can't possibly hate puppies. I'm not saying they would go out and buy a puppy, I'm just saying they would still find puppies cute despite their hatred for dogs. So, your friend Kelly is paying you a very nice compliment, so don't question it like you're doing!

I normally stay away from this section because people in it are so nasty. I could care less about pure breeds, mutts etc. The designer dogs are annoying though because the breeder is getting so much money for mutts, when there are so many great dogs out there who need good homes (I would know since my mom has been the dog control officer my entire life). I do somewhat prefer mutts because they are cheaper, and I only want dogs to train, play with, hike, camp etc. I really don't care about showing or papers or looks. I wish the dog world could just be about companionship, and having a family dog, and not all this showing off about pure breeds or expense. We have mostly had mutts (some found stray through DCO work, most from the shelter), and now for the first time one purebred. He is a German shepherd (we got him from a German Shepherd rescue where he would have had to be put down otherwise). From what I've seen our mutts have been just as good as the purebred German shepherd and vise versa. Health wise and personality. I do wish everyone could just have dogs to increase the family, and no other reason. But I know that will never change.

Puppies are associated with cuteness and innocence and being precious.
The phrase means that someone would have to be a cruel and evil person to hate you (like someone would have to be cruel and hateful to hate a puppy)

Puppies are normally seen as cute, even by dog haters...

I imagine that she means it's as difficult to hate you as it is to hate a puppy, and only the most heartless bastards hate puppies.
