Can you take an AP exam without taking the corresponding AP course?

This year I'm a junior and taking honors English (British Literature to be specific). My school offers two AP English courses, but I decided not to take AP English this year because the teacher is insane (As in, you hand in a well-written paper and she gives you a D without bothering to explain what you did wrong; and then when you ask her what you did wrong, she sends you away without answering your question. She is also known to give bad grades on essays if your point of view on the subject of the essay is different from hers. These reviews come form her current and previous students by the way, not from me since I don't personally know her). So I opted to take honors English instead, luckily got an enthusiastic and fair teacher, and am currently getting an A+.
I actually have several questions:
1. Can I take the AP exam(s) for English without taking the AP English course(s)?
2. What are my chances of doing well on an AP exam for English without having taken an AP class for it?
3. If I get a good score, can I earn college credit, and how much can I earn?

Thanks in advanced to everyone who answers!

1. Yes
2. It definitely helps to take the class and to have a teacher critique your work and tell you what you did well/not so well in your essays, but at the same time, it's definitely possible to do well self-studying. After you take a practice test, maybe get a friend or your current Honors English teacher to read over your essays and score them/give you feedback, and go on collegeboard.com and look at past essay prompts/scoring rubrics.
3. It depends on what college you go to. Some don't give credit for any AP classes; for others, it might help get you out of having to take any further English classes altogether. Also, some colleges accept 3's, while others might require a 4 or even a 5.

No. you are able to desire to take the class and get a passing grade to get intense college credit for it. Your HS transcripts does not coach you took a calculus type. Your transcripts, not the AP examination, is what colleges seem at to make their decision on your popularity. so as that they could see out of your transcripts, no calculus and no AP. The AP examination is for a threat college credit basically. You get a rating on the AP examination. then you certainly could would desire to analyze each and each colleges' internet internet site. not all college settle for all AP matters. you are able to would desire to work out what matters the faculty takes, what rating it mandatory (oftentimes a minimum of a 4) and what credit is given.
