Downloading Skyrim and the download is gonna take quite a bit of time. Would my laptop be harmed or anything of the sort if I left it on all night while I slept then kept it on while I went to school so it would be finished downloading by the time I got back to school? I don't wanna take any risks.

Should be fine, unless you have experienced overheating problems in the past with your laptop. Make sure you don't block the laptop's airflow.

As long as it has good fans/airflow it should be fine. I would leave in a cool, open space.
