Blood pressure issues are a common sign of drinking related physical dysfunction. Generally there is an excess of fluid built up in the body and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure increases. Which is why diuretic BP medications work well for this type of issue. As for the kidneys specifically -- Pain just below the ribs is common. (In Back) Initially more frequent urination during the night,.. but then eventually less frequent urination at all times as the kidney dysfunction progresses. "Foamy" Urine -- All urine can be somewhat foamy due to the nature of it hitting the water and the ingredients in urine,.. but you can tell what looks 'overly foamy'. Pain or Burning during urination. Infrequent Urination. Overly Frequent Urination. Very dark urine. Blood in Urine. Essentially blood work and a Urinalysis will give the direct story on your kidney function (as well as other organs..) You can test kidney function by measuring how much protein (urea) byproduct is present in urine,.. as well as creatinine level,.. BUN ratio's.. and so on. All very common tests. Obviously ceasing the drinking gives your body the best chance --- The kidneys like alot of blood, especially when they are in a state of dysfunction, they use a chemical called renin to regulate blood pressure - and often this causes some chronicly high blood pressure. Oedema occurs typically around the ankles, and other extremities in kidney dysfunction. I wouldn't delay or wait on this. I know it is a scary proposition -- but you are ALWAYS better off knowing sooner than later where you stand on your organ function. Go to the doctor, be HONEST, and him or her that you simply want to know how things currently stand. Keep in mind, even if you get results with some level of kidney (and perhaps liver) dysfunction .. BOTH can heal quite a bit .. IF.. you stop drinking. I know that is the obvious solution, but procrastination due to fear is ever so common in these situations, and you will feel alot better just biting the bullet, facing the fear, and getting it done. At the same time why not go ahead and check out an AA meeting. (You don't have to talk). Just to see what it is all about. It can help for issues WAY beyond just drinking.. and its free. I'm not pushing this, or saying you are an "alcoholic" etc.. but let's be honest. The best future for you is probably some help with the drinking .. ie: AA,.. and a visit to the doctor to see where you stand. Then you can work off the alcohol in time, WITH your doctors help. Don't just go cold turkey if you drink everyday.. you have to wean. (You may need a detox for this.. just depends). Then you can watch your organ function improve and your mental/emotional health improve with the counseling/group help with AA. Or you can always go one on one with a psychologist if you have that kind of money. Good luck to you,

Kidney problems from diabetes. Avoid sugar. get tested.

Unfortunately, that does sound like kidney issues. Any time you have excessive pain, it's a sign of a problem and a cry for medical attention. Like everyone on Y!A, I'm going to give you the best piece of advice I can give anyone here that has a medical related issue: Talk to your doctor. He or she is the best allie you can have on the medical front lines.

You've mentioned that you're a drinker. How many drinks does that mean? How many in a night? A week? Would you say that you use alcohol or abuse it? These are all important questions to examine and answer truthfully.

Pain, high blood pressure, and frequent urination (all of which you mentioned) are symptoms of kidney issues. Dark or discolored urine, irregular heartbeat, general weakness, loss of appetite, and increasing breathing are also signs. Seeing as you were able to mention three symptoms without a prompt, I'd say it's severe enough to see your doctor immediately.
