Do you think it's because he turned his back on God?
Proverbs 3:1-2, "My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee."

Just how craSs and unchristian can you get to use a tragic death to make christians look so NASTY?
He died of esophageal cancer from which most die long before that age!
It is tragic that people like yourself lack humanity and shame christians in the way you do!
Hmmn, so by your logic all the children who die at six from leukemia 'turned their backs on God too?'
'Proverbs 3:1-2, "My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee."'
I doubt a six year old abides by those things either.
I think you know deep down how flawed that logic of thinking actually is. It makes your God sound childish and conceited as well. You're not doing him any favors by suggesting he works that way.
No, it's because he had cancer. You have a really disturbing fantasy, where your supposedly all-merciful god kills people for not worshiping. And one that is demonstrably untrue, Christians can die of cancer at 62 too.
Oh, and 62 is "so young" because of modern medicine, science, and technology, in the age where the church dominated, the life expectancy was much shorter and quality of life much harder. It turns out that when you have sewage treatment plants and vaccines, instead of just praying at the **** in your water and blaming illnesses on demons, people live longer.
And finally, your own Bible contradicts that claim, that your God somehow rewards whom he finds righteous with long life and strikes down the wicked young. Ecclesiastes, 7:15 "All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness."
A person's ancestry plays a huge role in life expectancy. If his parents and ancestors died young, then the likelihood that he will die young is increased. Other factors include, but are not limited to life style, which may include habits that lead to early deaths (smoking, obesity, etc.).
Proverbs is part of the "writings" of the Jews and some scholars consider them not to be of Hebrew origin.

I am not of the opinion that 62 is a particularly young age for the death of a male. Additionally, as the first user noted Hitchens admitted to a long history of alcohol abuse.
Would you not find it fallacious, and in miserably poor taste, if anytime an Evangelical were to pass away before he reached the median age of life expectancy non-Evengelicals were to bruit this as signs of the vacuuity of his beliefs.
