How do you get trouble codes from 1997 Ford Taurus w/check engine light on?

3.0 Liter V6 runs fine, shifts okay. Drives fine, just "service engine soon" light stays on.

That should be an OBDII system. Many auto parts stores will read them for free. Check one in your area. You'll be replacing the gas cap I predict.
