Which hip measurement do I use?

When I measure the fullest part of my hips (which is right on my butt, near my pelvic bone) I get 41".

However, If I was looking in a mirror and picked the part that sticks out the most (which is right near the top of my hip bones, a few inches below my belly button) then I get around 35".

Do I just take the larger number no matter what?

For shirt measurements, take the hip bone. For pants, take the butt measurement. (that is so, that when you put your pants on, you won't be squeezing a 35" diameter around a 41" diameter)
FOr general measurent, you also, go with the butt.

Wherever measures the most, which is for most women around the butt and thighs. I know if you look in the mirror the hip bones might seem wider, but it's the overall circumference that counts, not just how it looks straight on.
