woman gives her dog away, then harasses to get it back. help?

friend of my family is a pensioner, looking to get another dog after hers died, someone told her this woman got a dog a 15month old japanese akita, because she didn't get on with the other dog living in the home, so my friend said she would give her a loving home, my friend has got her all up to date with her jabs, and chipped her. the dog has clearly been neglected, not socialised with other dogs or humans and couple of scars on her legs. after being in her new home since December her previous owner wants her back, and is phoning my friend harassing her to give her dog back. where does my friend stand?

not getting rid of it, shes been bounced from place to place, and my friend plans on keeping her, she will put any fight up for her, all the dog need is to go to behaviour classes and to be socialised, my friends issue is to do with the previous owner.

your friend should go to the police and complain about the harassment. She now has an interest in the dog, after paying fro vet bills, etc. Tell her to keep those receipts so that she has proof of the amount of money she's paid out, as well as a statement from the vet about the condition of the dog when she first brought it in. This will help if she decides to sue for the dog.

You can call the police and charge the previous owner with harassment if you want to. Since there was no money exchanged, the dog is considered a gift. The previous owner has no right to demand it back.

I would get rid of it at a shelter where it will be properly looked after and has time to recover if injured. Then if this person wants the dog they can argue and prove them selves fit enough to look after the dog with the shelter and not you. Either way your not liable for a potential dangerous dog due to their neglect.
