What to do before starting a website?

I am interested in getting a domain and starting a website. I would appreciate any advice on getting a good deal, and what to do about hosting, and the benefits of some companies or organization doing it for me, or hosting on my own desktop.

I would also love it if someone gave me a name of a good formatting software to make the site look pretty~

Thanks in advance...

Software doesn't make a site look pretty. It's the user behind the software. Notepad works well.

I use hostgator.com for hosting.

You Should always have a design planned out before you publish a website. good software to do this is Microsoft office publisher 2003. Next check to see if the domain name you want is already taken. This is as simple as google searching it. Sites like godaddy.com make it easy to register a domain name.

yes you need a domain first and then buy a hosting package.

for the contents of your site, you can learn to code yourself. another choice to built a site is using pre

made scripts/templates. there're many such scripts (many of them are free) so you can built a site fast and easily.

as for hosting, it's better to choose a top, stable host. most web hosts offer coupons. so you can use coupons to save.

hope this helps.

I have been doing all of my hosting though reliabox.com, they have fast servers and good support. If you decide to do your site your self i would do a wordpress site in which it can be easily installed through Fantastico. Once set up you can install one of many themes and customize it your self pretty easy.

I recommend saving money before making a website. It cost money to make one and you need to pay monthly. The less money i saw to pay monthly is 9$
