We all know that English is the language we used today for business, traveling, etc. But what language was used back in the middle ages? For example, if a french ambassador went to spain to visit the king, what language would they speak? Latin? French? Spanish?

Trade at the time wasn't nearly as globalized as it is now, so there was no de facto language. Most Asian countries had some kind of ties with China, so a lot used Chinese for trade. European countries used Latin for mostly Church related things, but they may have used it for communication, I'm not sure.

The Middle Ages is usually considered the time period after the fall of the Roman Empire. The church continued its use of Latin, but the Byzantine Empire was what came next. They mostly spoke Greek.
