Next week there are try-puts for the basketball team. I don't expect to get in, but I'd really like to not look like an idiot. Can anyone give me simple tips on how to defend better? (I am mainly a netballer)

Keep your hands up at all times, point to your man and know where the ball is at all times. Also If your in zone be ready to help and sag out of your area a bit. Be quick and on your toes.
get low. bend your knees and play from your legs down. If you stand stright up you won't have the power game. As for moves, try the over under. When you go up you can try being mean at first by faking and as the guy comes down fromt he fake, rake the ball up his face on your way up. The ref will call the a foul on the other guy for leaving his feet. Next time, jump into your man exposing and creating contact with your ribs. Always a foul on the defender if you do it right. As far as overall post play, it's all basketball IQ. Just learn all the moves you can (fadeaway, over under, drop step, hook shots and inturn pops) and then study how defenders react. Then take advantage of their mistakes in the game. Good luck!
