Lying on an apartment application about employment?

My boyfriend and I want to get an apartment, its a tax credit program so they require you NOT to make above a certain income, we fortunately yet unfortunately do. We have a baby on the way so we really want to move into this apartment because it isnt as expensive. So basically, can apartment complexes verify if you have a job? I was going to tell them that I dont work, which would be a lie. But we dont want to over qualify and not be able to get the apartment. How can they find out if I am lying or telling the truth? Will a background check show this? Also, my boyfriend is going to be the lease holder, I would go under as occupant. I know this is probably wrong to do, so I dont need to hear that. Just would like answer to my question.

reenzz- You are an idiot. I havent done it yet, so I havent made US taxpayers defaud anything. If I said I have a job, I clearly also pay taxes. Also, my unborn baby would NEVER be homeless, we make enough to live elsewhere. Your answer was fine, until you decided to give 3 reasons instead of 2.

There is a possibility that you could get away with this initially, but the problem is that these special programs do a lot of checking and re-checking (just for this reason; there are a lot of people committing welfare fraud like this) and you will probably get caught before too long. This will result in eviction for both of you (and the baby) and you would probably not be allowed to requalify for a very long time.

I don't think they would actually pursue criminal fraud charges against you, but that is a remote possibility as well.

1. The landlord is required by law to verify employment of all tenants. They will do a credit check and a background check. Your employment history will show up.

2. Lying on an application for subsidized housing is a federal crime and a felony...punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

3. I know you don't want to hear this, but shame on you for not only asking us taxpayers to help you defraud us, but for putting your unborn child at risk of being thrown out into the streets and homeless.



edit: please.. First of all, .you are clearly asking how you can get away with defrauding the taxpayers and government. Let's not sugar coat your question.

Second, your future actions, as YOU described will either put the both of you in prison, this making your child a ward of the state and/or evicted to the streets...unable to rent elsewhere because of the eviction on your record...hence, homeless.

Yes, of course they can verify, and they do. They require to see pay stubs and tax returns for subsidized housing. The rent is subsidized by taxpayer dollars, they are thorough in their checks and lying is an actual crime.
