Problems with hp laptop screen?

Lately my laptop screen has been dim after it gets to the desktop screen. I can see the screen if I hold a light to it (what I'm doing now).I've noticed that if I start it up without it being plugged in, it doesn't go dim, but when I plug it in, it usually goes dim after a few seconds. Anyone know how I could stop this or fix this? I was thinking it could be a battery problem or an issue with the backlight.

It doesn't get a little dim, it get's black (almost) and I can only see it when I shine a bright light at the screen.

Sounds like a bad back light. To get a good accurate answer give the brand, model number, installed operating system of the laptop when asking a question as all PC's are not the same. If you connect it to a second monitor and the picture is okay it means you have a bad screen, loose cable, loose connection, bad inverter or lamp back light. If you want to fix it your self there are videos on youtube that show how to do it, but it is not easy.
