What to do with a wild mouse?

My husband set a trap since we had discovered evidence of a mouse. I checked the trap this morning and the mouse was in it but it wasn't dead. I got the mouse out of the trap and have it outside in an aquarium with a secured lid and some food, water and bedding. I know that it had to have been injured but I don't know how bad. I have outdoor cats and I can't let it free since they will catch the mouse easily. I plan on letting it back into the wild but I will probably do so away from my house. I need to know how long to keep it before it will be okay to leave outside. I want to give it a fighting chance, I just don't want it in my house.

I am going to be letting the mouse free. I just need to know how long before I know that it is better and well enough to survive outside again? 2 days? 3 days? I just want to be sure it's okay before setting it free.

Apparently, they make great pets. As you have cats outside, you could try get a big cage and put a small one inside of it so the cats can't get to the mouse. If keeping the mouse, as you don't want it in the house, and the cats outside - you could go to a pet store and sell him, unless you set him free away from your house/garden. I think the mouse would prefer to be free, instead of being trapped in a cage for the rest of his life. You should release it, it isn't fair on the little guy.
