Alfie, I'm from Lincolnshire, England. This to me is who does it best. Laura Nyro! New York Tenderberry as; an album cut is just lush. The album has N.Y. running all over it, as much of her work has. A much under rated artist. To me, she is the best as, you say " period! " Yes, I really do like her, her work. Just before Christmas read her book by: Michele Cort - Soul Picinc. Great read. As a young lad growing up in East London, I caught on to the similarities in our locations.

Maybe the Velvet Underground and specifically their 1st album which has references in there to the city.
"Gonna take a walk down Union Square, you never know who your going to find there"
"Up to Lexington, 125, feel sick & dirty more dead than alive"
125 Lexington is an address in Harlem.
