My contract with AT&T is done in May of 2012. I'm thinking of cancelling my data plan as soon as it's done, right now I still have the unlimited plan for $30. I'm thinking of cancelling it and use the $ to apply data plan for my iPad.

Unfortunately, no. They won't let you keep the voice plan without the data plan on an iPhone. You should just let it lapse. Then, go get the phone unlocked. (There are even sites online that will do it for you). Then, after you get it unlocked go sign up for the T-mobile prepaid plan described here https://sites.google.com/site/cheapsmartphone/ this way you'll only pay $30 a month for an iPhone. The two things that you'll need though are: a) and unlocked iPhone and b) a SIM cutter that costs about $6. Check out the site. Hopefully you can save some money and get yourself an iPad.
