During a "barking break," praise your dog and pet it. Soon, he learns that stopping is rewarded, but barking is ignored. Other tricks: put a ticking clock near the pup to mimic mom's heartbeat; turn the radio on quietly, with soft music or talk..

The pup is lonely and probably not far from being weaned off it's mother. Dogs are pack animals and are use to company. Try a warmed water bottle with a cuddly cover in his/her bed or they could always purchase a soothing sounds cuddly toy which has a least four various sounds that would put the pup to sleep including a heartbeat. Puppies, like babies, are comforted by the sound of a mothers heartbeat

sorry but your friend is going to have a few sleepless nites until the pup adjusts to the new household and bedtime routine.
You can try giving the pup a shirt with your scent, wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel, a ticking clock may help.. but really the pup still just simply needs time to adapt.
take the pup out to potty when it cries, then back into the crate for bedtime.

If they have a shed in their garden (if they don't live in an apartment) that their not using they could put dog stuff in the shed and they could put the puppy in there (but only if the shed has a lock because someone could try to steal the dog if they know it's there)

Attrition. Can they put his kennel in their room?
