I'm a sophomore and he's a senior.....were friends on Facebook and have the same lunch ......since that's about all we have in common how could I start a conversation with him either in person or preferably on Facebook?

if you have any mutual friends, you could see if they might introduce you to him more formally.
or you could just sit at his table during lunch and see if he reacts well.
i wouldn't initiate conversations via Facebook, as it isn't an especially good indicator of how well you click socially.
