My dogs pull against their leashes a lot when I walk them. I had a friend suggest that I run the leash from their collar down their backs and then loop it around their midsection just forward of the back legs. Instead of pulling against their necks, if they pull on the leash, it tightens around their mid sections and this seems to be more effective in getting them to stop pulling. I know dogs have a somewhat complex anatomy internally and while the method seems to work, I was wondering if it is safe for the dog.

Don't do this, patience and proper training can rectify this situation.
Often people say that harnesses encourage dogs to pull on, I don't know if it's true or not but it makes sense, sled dogs use harnesses.
I use a collar.
You need to start at a place where there is not much distraction, backyard, house (if it's big enough) or outside early in the morning. Walk him by your side, just slow walk and stop. Repeat repeat repeat. If he tries to pull away, tell him no and tug on the lease a bit. If he goes a little crazy, tap him on his hip either with your foot or hand (gently though) this will get their attention and stop walking, do not start walking again until he is still. Just keep doing this and he will eventually learn. Try holding a treat in front of him to keep his attention.
No don't do that they can really hurt them. My dog pulls a lot and I use a harness and it helps control the dog a lot better. Hears a tip for when your dog pulls. Every time you walk and it pulls then just tug on it a little not very hard. Then eventually they will start walking better, but definitely don't do what your friend says. I may be wrong, I am pretty sure it will hurt them. You can try it in your yard and if it seams like it's hurting your dog don't do it.
the answer to your question is no , it is not safe for the dog i suggest if you are want the pulling to stop invest in a dog backpack and get it to carry your water bottles in it to add some weight to the backpack which make the dog walk slower because it fells it has a job to do. and also if you are considering the harness make sure you get the right one for your breed of dog some dogs by putting a harness on them makes them pull harder in most cases. in turn not helping the problem
I have a 75 pound lab who loves to pull on the leash. We've found that either gentle leaders or "Halti" are very effective. It may take the dogs a few times wearing them to become used to them but they make it to where every time the dog pulls on the leash it turns their head and therefore their direction making it so they can't pull. Hope that helps :)
No, it screams internal organ damage. There are a variety of collars and harnesses designed specifically to keep the dog from pulling that are safe and do not damage the dog.
