How to sync android with gmail?

Ok so I have an android and was trying to get one of those textfree/textplus apps, but it said I have to like sync the phone with my gmail account or something like that, can someone please tell me how to do that? Also does anyone have a suggestion about which free texting app to get? Thanks!!!!

go into your contacts, press the menu button, there should be something like accounts, and you sign in there.. as for free txting, try WhatsApp :3
