Ps3 doesn't want to work?

Question

My dad bought a ps3 pretty cheap at a garage sale yesterday, and we tried hooking it up to the TV. When we plug in our other ps3 (which was bought new) the TV recognizes it and 'makes' the HDMI channel. However, when we tested the garage sale one with our new one's cables, it would turn on and accept disks, but no HDMI channel would appear.
Tips, suggestions?

Connect it via AV and see if that works. If it works you go to display settings and change it to HDMI input, then the display will disappear, and then all you need to do is unplug the AV cable and plug in the HDMI cable.
