We have proven that we could go to the moon and walk on it. What would we prove by putting a human on Mars? It is horribly expensive and it would take months to get there. I think if we don't discover a much faster and cheaper way to travel through space it is not worth sending humans.
The shuttle program was a disaster. The US wanted a space ship to take off and land like they do in scifi movies, but it never worked out that way. It is still much cheaper to use a conventional disposable rocket ship to get into orbit.
