I went though this 20 years ago. . . Having built boats now for over 45 years, the dwindling supply of 'marine plywood' had me very complexed. Then I went (by chance opportunity) to meet with one of the last great wooden boat buillders in England.

It was then I discovered the secret to 'marine plywood'. Haven't bought any since - or maybe I have and didn't know it.

Believe it or not, it was Chris Craft that started this. It seems, back in their hayday, they sent buyers to the lumber mills to pick out the 'choice plywood' for themselves. This was originally marked by the mills as "Chris Craft Grade". As more and more competitors and plywood boat builders entered the market, "Chris Craft Grade" became "marine grade".

What was it, I mean really? What exactly was (or is) "marine grade? I discoverd that it was simply the hand picked best of lot of A - A grade both sides. And if you visit any mill, they will tell you that. Retailers however will have you believe that special wood and special glue makes up "marine grade" plywood - but it just isn't so, least not anymore, and hasn't been any difference for over 30 years. Ask any mill, and they will tell you, they don't change the glue or the process for "marine grade".

In the past 20 years, I have visited places such as Lowes, Bulders Supply, Home Depot, etc. and simply hand picked my sheets out of their A-A grade. Now, 20 years later, I have had absolutely no problems with any of the 20 or so boats I have built - 4 of which have been live a-board size.

If you are using boat epoxy and laminating your sheets after your cuts, no moisture, air, insects can reach it anyway; If you are fiberglassing over that (which I always did - it just makes even more sense to hand pick the product yourself.

So, that would be my suggestion. It takes a little more time on your part, but gives you a handy supply at a reasonable price - and I assure you the product is the same.

Marine plywood business has come along a long way. Marine plywood supplier in India are doing very good job as far as manufacturing and supply of plywood is concerned. Marine plywood is the costliest wood and is primarily used for building boats and ships. It is completely water proof as it is used for marine applications.

Without any information about where in the world you want to buy this product, it's impossible to give an answer. As always, you're free to go compare prices anywhere they sell the product that you want to buy.

Added: De Nada, Bob.

Don't forget that sheets of plywood tend to be heavy and awkward to handle. If you can find a source in California that sells for a few pennies cheaper, but have to pay extra for shipping, are you really saving anything? Shop local sources first.
