We should only kill them when necessary. People often choose to kill things, unnecessarily, out of fear and ignorance. Often the termites don't pose a real threat. it sometimes is necessary to kill colonies in order to protect things. Prof C-Y Lee of the Universiti Sains Malaysia has a wonderful photo of a giant golden Bhudda statue with a termite bait on it.
Less than one in ten species around the world does serious damage to our stuff. In natural and semi-natural ecosystems they perform all sorts of important jobs and may other species (reptiles, birds, mammals) depend on them. They rarely actually kill trees by themselves but do like to feed on already sickly or dead ones. Non-native pest termites are best killed when found as they tend to cause the worst problems, but we should just lean to get along with the native ones.
If you build properly, they are easy to avoid and new houses should have physical barriers to keep out the subterranean termites. Mostly we can get along. I have several colonies and three different species living in my yard and we get on just fine.

The sun will rise again in the new horizon. The moon return to it's calm mental state, the water will run according to the current, and the mountains shall appear as a glourious symbol of hope and happiness along the rays of the sun.
