What would be the best way to accept credit card payments to me?

I am a one man show who travels to different stores repairing sewing machines (sewing computers). I cannot be in each store when customers come in to pick up and pay for their machines repair. They can leave checks or cash. I have had too much trouble getting payment back from some businesses that accept the credit card payments and then forwarding it on to me. I do use a Square Up credit card scanner on my smart phone but I can't always be in the place to accept payment that way.
Getting confusing maybe. Sorry.

@dougebear... the problem with that is they never have enough cash on hand to pay me. Most business is done with credit or debit cards.

Sounds like the problem isn't accepting credit cards, but getting the stores to process payments they receive. I'd see what you can do with each of the stores, perhaps only accept cash payment from the stores that have already permitted the customer to pay by credit card, allowing them to process the credit card payment whenever and however they see fit.

Dougear is correct. Your customer is the store they have absolutely no valid business reason not to pay you when you do service other then you allow credit. You also have no way to enforce against the owners of the machines. Have the businesses pay you by CC if you want, fix the machine and they pay you on the spot

They could pay via PayPal or possibly wire transfer to your bank account.
