rod&reel tip-ups on peir?

My grandpa gave me these small "tip-ups" for a rod&reel. Back before i was born he would fish the North Pier in Racine WI, where i go now, for trout, salmon, perch, and walleye. He said he used to use them but before I left his house from a week long fishing trip with him i forgot to ask how to use them, so does anyone know how to use them???

You cast your bait out off the pier.then tighten up the slack, and insert the line next to the reel into the tip up,once you have set the trip mechanism in it's ready to trip position, then when a fish takes,it releases the line and the little flag goes off, make sure you have the bailwire in the open position,or the rod will flip over the railing into the drink.I would assume it's the kind that mounts onto the rod,am I right?
