Quick Question on Corequisite Classes?

I would like to take a general chemistry class (CHM151) this coming college semester... There is a corequisite of MAT161. What if I surpassed that level in my accuplacer test and am taking MAT172, a more advanced math class, this coming semester? Does it count or do I really have to take the lower-level math class...?

It depends on the requirements of your degree plan. Even though I had placed out through multivariable calculus (calc 3), I was required to take a business math class which was the equivalent of algebra 2 mixed with calc 1. But that was for a business major. There may be terminology that is useful in MAT161 that pertains to your specific major, while MAT172 may not. Check the prerequisites of 200-300 level courses to see if they accept MAT161 and MAT172 for the next courses you may take.
