For guys to stay out of the friend zone is the best method to simply talk about what each person wants out of hanging out/socializing before it happens? I would think it is as confusion is one way the friend zone starts.

If you don't want to be in the friend zone, pretend it doesn't exist
You can't decide what you want out of hanging out/socializing beforehand, because that will prevent the events from occurring naturally, and it will take out all the fun and adventure. People are sometimes drawn to mystery
