Why does my mom's dog pee in the food bowls?

We have to pick up all the food bowls quickly or her dog will pee in every food bowl. Why does he do that?

@Jen: I thought it was funny at first, but then I realize I had to clean out all the bowls and the mess on the floor. It stop being funny after that.

@Shaley: He does it after all the food is gone. He likes the food. Trust me he eats like a pig.

@beccabear: You know he came from a horrible background. Not only was he from animal hoarders house, but he was also badly abused by them. He was also from what I know locked up most of the time, unless he was getting abused...

He's marking them - many males will do that. I had a little Chihuahua years ago, that would go over and whiz on the other dog's bowl after they were both finished eating.

It was his way of saying - "This, too is mine!" It's male thing, but you should correct the behavior and pick the bowls up right after they eat.

this happened to my dog!! we took her to the vet and the vet checked to see if she had kidney problems or anything like that, but she didn't. I would start by going to the vet. From our vet, we found out that the reason our dog was doing that was because she was bred in a puppy mill and they are kept in kennels, so they mark their food with their pee so other dogs won't eat it. I don't know if this is the same situation for your dog, but ours was a puppy when she did this and we got her to stop by scolding her whenever she did it and she eventually learned to stop.
