Look music scale knowledge is great but it's not necessarily needed. You have to feel the music it has to come from inside you. You will have to give it depth and feeling or you will sound stale and generic. Will learning the scales help you? Absolutely. But some of the best I have heard never took a lesson and are self taught. Quit thinking you have to learn them you don't. The best always want to learn anything that makes them better.
You don't NEED theory knowledge to write a guitar solo. You really don't need theory and learn a bunch of scales before you start playing guitar in general. It just helps and knowing it would just give you an advantage.
I play guitar and write the main riffs for my band (I'll provide a link if you want). I know my theory, but when it comes to just jamming and writing, I don't need it. Scales and what not are not what I'm thinking about as I write. I just write what sounds cool. I mean having the knowledge of theory is useful because it allows me to write in odd time signatures, and use scales that add a sense of musicality to the song. Just gives me an advantage over musicians who don't know much about it, but like I said you don't need it to write a solo.
No, you don't. Some of the most famous guitarists like Jimi Hendrix didn't know music theory at all. You just have to pick up your guitar, and if you find something that sounds good, then you can use it, there are really no 'rules' to music.. a few scales could help, and their easy to learn. But you don't have to know them.
That is only one approach. In doing that you get an understanding of what notes logically follow in your solo. Keep in mind that The Beatles could not read music. You can't beat what they did!
You don't need a great deal of theory, but knowing the scales is useful in that it will help you stay in key. Dave Gilmour admits that his theory is crap, but he does know the scales.
