Can I change a wave file to 8 bits and to 22 kHz?

lol at above... you obviously know nothing about audio...
What you are doing is NOT changing the file at all, you are just changing how audacity samples the audio...

You have to resample an audio file if you wish to change the bit depth and sample rate...
You can resample the sample rate in audacity going to tracks > resample > settings it to what you want.
But audacity is not able to change the bit depth of the audio, you will need alittle more advanced software for that.

So you know, when you convert something to 8bit at 22k its going to be distorted and will probably cause offtones and static.


EDIT: well decided to click link. so now i know you mean a sound effect rather then music. With sound effects it isnt as bad since they only last like 1second or less.
But still, when you drop to 8bit, you lose alot.

I seem to remember doing that easily in windows 98 (I'm old). I know how to do that programmatically, but I don't feel like writing that for you.

Yes audacity apparently can do that. Right click the wav file and "open with" audacity. In the leftist part of the graphical representation of your wav file, there is the button with the name of the wav file. Click it and "set sample format" and "set sample rate" are there. If you want to save your changes you have to use the export file option from the File Menu.

Oops, it doesn't appear that 8-bit was available, only 16, 32, and 32 float, but that may depend on how the wav was recorded....Show more
