Care and keeping of long mane?

Looking for ideas to keep a long mane in show condition. I'm hoping to show my three year old next spring, she will be four by then, with a long mane. The problem I'm having is that even over night she is getting dreadlocks, and it is breaking off the hair as I remove them. I know there are differing opinions on tail care (braid different methods, sock or leave alone)....I'm a leave alone fan, but I've never heard opinions about mane care. Any Arabian, Morgan or Saddlebred showers out there that have to keep up a long mane?

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I may try a combination of them. She is a sorrel with a really light flaxen mane, almost white, so I was afraid that lots of conditioner or CM oil would attract dirt and/or stain her mane. The stockings idea sounds a lot like a slinky, do you tie it under her girth area to keep it in place? She is out 12/24, so she does get into some dirt.

You could get an extra large pair of tights. Cut some holes for ears and sew up the edges, so runs do not occur. After brushing and teasing the mane gently till it is tangle free, put the tights (maybe one leg if she has a thin neck) over her ears and stretching it, unravel down her neck until you reach the withers. Or you could do loose pig tails, fastened with thread to prevent it tangling or breaking, though if you are going to do this, rubbers are not a good idea because it can break the hairs.

Put big chunky braids in and be sure to take them out every once and a while to redo them. Only brush if the hair is clean. Other than that do not brush the mane or you will be pulling out the hairs and breaking them. About 4 or 5 big braids will help you keep the mane long and thick

Mine's 1 / 4 horse... yet I rarely ever brush or comb her mane. If she gets tangles...I take them out with my arms. whilst it replaced into time to pass to a instruct...that replaced into the only time it replaced into 'combed' and braided. I in basic terms say this simply by fact I own 1 / 4 horse...that has a mane that hangs approximately 5 inches previous the backside of her neck. i think of it continues to be long simply by fact i do no longer mess with it each and all the time. same together with her tail...it of course grows to the floor. So I in basic terms shop the tangles out with my arms. I guess your boy is alluring! i'm particular his hair care is extra huge than mine...i presumed there replaced right into a product called a mane keeper. might might desire to pass google!

I know how you feel. I own a Gypsy Cob (They have a very long/thick mane) and I refuse to put her beautiful hair up in braids. My method is to simply condition it well and use plenty of detangler. I also run my fingers through her mane whenever I go to see her/feed her/etc

There is a product I use called Cowboy Magic, and it is TRUELY magic :) its a light oil you put in the mane or tail and after you use it you can literally run your fingers through it. It is amazing. I used it at a rescue ranch on a mare who had never had her mane combed, and she had the dreadlocks going on, and it made the process so much easier. you can usually find it at any store you buy your regular grooming supplies, or online. Hope this helps, and good luck!
(also, a little goes a long way!)
