I followed a description on how to turn on God Mode in the consul. It turns on but how do you exit from the consul ? Game is basically stuck at that point, only cure is to reboot the whole thing.

Try disabling it the same way you enabled it with SHIFT + ~ Good game.

Can you provide your computing device specs. With the at all times advancing pc gaming market and Double Helix being a decently old title i might hate to reccomend some thing your computer couldn't run.
