I'd like to try some high dynamic range edits on photos, but it seems as if most, if not all of the (HDR)programs require the use of another higher end (Photo Shop, etc) editing package. I'm somewhat familiar with NIK and others, but would ideally like to try it on the cheap. I do most of my photo editing with basic freebie programs, such as Windows Picture Gallery, Picasa, etc. I have a Corel program, but it's too buggy to use. Any thoughts

Full disclosure, I'm not a photo guy, but I know a guy who has used this in the past: http://www.darktable.org/features/ It's free, open source, mentions HDR.
Doesn't seem to say anything about being able to run in windows, You could get a persistent LiveUSB of xubuntu and install it. This is in the ubuntu repositories.
