Bake child at 325 for 90 minutes, then increase heat to 425 until browned. Let rest five minutes before carving.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Here are a couple of recipes kids can make:
Metric Play Dough
A painless way to remind kids that the rest of the planet operates on a more sensible system…
250 ml flour (a little over 1 cup)
125 ml salt (a little over ½ cup)
2.5 ml cream of tartar (1/2 tsp.)
250 ml water (a little over 1 cup)
Food coloring (a few drops)
20 ml cooking oil (1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp.)
5 ml vanilla extract (1 tsp.)
Mix food coloring with water. Mix with remaining ingredients and cook over medium heat until mixture peels away from the sides of the pan and becomes dough-like in consistency. Store in airtight container. Makes a small, fragrant quantity.
Crystal Garden
Your child’s patience will ultimately be rewarded…a good thing to learn so early!
4-6 charcoal briquettes
250 ml. water (a little over one cup)
Food coloring
White vinegar
Salt
Place several charcoal briquettes in a disposable bowl. Boil 250 ml. of water. Add salt to the water and stir until no more will dissolve. Add vinegar to the salt water. Pour over the charcoal so that some pieces stick up out of the water. Add drops of fool coloring to the tops of the briquettes that stick out. In one to two weeks crystals will form on the charcoal.
