It's like sex positions. Most think all were thought up in the last 100 years, but humans have been been creative all along, and doing sexually taboo things within their culture, which is another part of it.
Trading wives has always been around, but the real popularity started when birth control was readily available, and when it came at the dawn on the sexual revolution, many explored it during the 60's and 70's. They would probably still be experimenting widely had not HIV/Aids hit the scene out of control during the 80's and 90's.
The term, known under many labels, came about in the 50's, about the time stag films were getting popular in some men circles, at men-only locations. The idea to have sex with many spawn that idea.
But again, there were stories of Native Americans having special areas within the tribal system for the gays and the promiscuous to have their areas on the far side of the family areas where they could do their thing then.
Eskimos had a guest policy if another man slept in their shelter, to help keep him warm the wife would cuddle and sometimes have sex as hospitality to their guest. I suspect before birth control, it might have been everything but vaginal sex.
I once read up on a term called cuckolding once, and there are guys who go bonkers to see their wives having sex with others. It's a serious turn-on, and not just naughty pillow talk. They expect their wife to be very naughty. In fact, the naughtier the better, and the BDSM form has the wife in control to make all decisions, and the husband none, so she can do who ever, whenever, and in any way without permission as she has all control.
