What can a governor/president put in an executive order?

I don't fully understand what exactly can be done through executive order. I know it exsists, but usually you need the congress to push laws through. So, I wanna know what can be done through means of executive order.

Its a directive..the president is the CEO of the country and gives executive orders sometimes to implement his policies. the president appoints the heads of federal agencies to run things..but an executive order is for something beyond the everyday running of these depts
