Girls: how important is a guy's taste in music?

I've always wondered about this. I listen to all different kinds of music: EDM, Reggae and Dancehall, Classic Rock, Stoner Rock, all different kinds of Rap/Hip Hop a few kinds of Metal, experimental electronic stuff, some Pop but very little (for the most part I hate everything on mainstream radio stations), the list goes on I won't bore you. As you can tell I'm pretty into music (I play a couple instruments and dabble in DJing.) Here's my problem: I go to a large university. I've found that most of the girls I met here don't listen to any of this kind of music. I go to a lot of raves but the girls who go to them (at least in this area) aren't usually university students and I'm not really interested in them (they're either E-Tards or poser dayglow ravers). When I go to house parties everyone plays the same 8 pop-house and pop-rap and pop-country songs that are big at the moment and it drives me insane. I'm torn. Half of me wants to pretend I don't mind this stuff. When I'm meeting new girls and their into this kind of music I don't want to be all negative about it because it just kills the vibe of having a good time at a party. I also don't want to sound like an arrogant hipster who thinks he has better taste than everybody (music is obviously completely subjective). On the other hand if a girl asks what I listen to my go to response is just "everything, I listen to a lot of different kinds of music" then they usually end up asking if I like Postal Service or Dave Matthews or Rascal Flatts. Should I tell these girls what they want to hear or not? Attractive college girls who care about their sororities and being popular and all that don't really give two sh**s about how many underground bands I like. They want to hook up with someone who fits into the "standard" college social scene and they won't give the time of day to guys they perceive as outsiders. Girls that I've met who like the same music as me seem to be one of three things. a) overweight or b) self absorbed fake hippies or c) hipsters

I'm in a sorority (I find questions to answer by searching 'sorority', that's why I'm here) - but I totally know how you feel.

I'm the same way - I listen to all types of music, most of which aren't mainstream. I hate when people ask what kind of music I listen to - who only listens to one genre these days?

What I have realized, though, is that indie/rock/reggae/etc isn't really good "party" music. People don't usually want to dance to that. A slow reggae song won't make people want to pound shots. So when asked, I would say "I like this kind of music to party to". No one will question that!

If you're just looking for a hook up, then honestly, who cares what music they listen to. If she's just trying to start a conversation that will lead to something that does not involve talking, just make small talk. If you can tell she's actually interested - then be honest. Say "I like lots of types, what about you?" and see what she says. Talk about music you have in common. 

You'd be surprised how many girls like underground music - and we just don't talk about it for the same reasons as you. And no, we're not all overweight/fake hippies/hipsters  :)
