Got ideas for open-ended activities about evergreen trees?

I don't want to focus specifically on "Christmas", but that is the children's interest right now. Would love to hear some suggestions for small-group activities. (Fishy, hoping to hear from you!)

ahhh Leslie I feel the love!...happy holidays to ya!

some of the greatest activities I loved doing was have evergreen branches at the science table to explore...we set out large magnifying glasses..alone with pine cones...of course one thing at a time extending the activity by adding to it each day. At the end of the week or the next week clear the table a bit and add "special" paper and drawing pencils and encourage them to draw the branch or cone. We also had books or magazines with pine trees in a variety of settings. Another idea for the science table is to have pine cones in various sizes and have them arrange them by size...and of course you could extend the drawing here too.the pine tree bark is also fun to explore, place paper over and rub with crayon.

ok this is messy but fun and i love art and the creative process...i took evergreen branches clean the ends so the children could hold them and dipped the needle part in a shallow paint tray and swat the branch onto white paper using green and red paint...you need branches for green paint and branches for red paint other wise the paint blends to a mucky black...one year we made placemats for the children and you could extend this by taking their photo near their favorit pine tree...we had several on the school grounds

ok using the clear contact paper and a variety of evergreens(small branches) pine needles and bark and pieces of pine cone they can make a collage. I added small squares of green and red tissue paper and we hung these in our window

one year i stripped the needles off the branch and had the children glue and make their own tree on paper

you can also on a tray have children paint an evergreen branch and press paper to it...or do the fold and press art with a smaller branch placed inside the paper.

hummm thinking.. thinking..what about attaching a small branch too the easel and see what happens.. :)...laugh it is amazing what they come up with

you could even add some to the block area and maybe have some photo of trucks hauling pine trees and see what they do with them. (of course these are very green branches so they do not hurt and poke)

ok hope that was helpful for a few good activities...leslie..thanks for thinking about me!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

What about focusing on how they grow, and provide birds with homes, etc? Then follow up with how they are logged, milled, and made into the chair they are sitting on, floor they stand on, cabinets, etc? Used as firewood for warmth, as I think you said you were up North, and with all the power outages, that would be something they could relate it. In that thought, used to make fires to cook, then maybe roast hot dogs, popcorn or marshmallows over a small fire, if permissible. Oxygen production, the rings to tell the age (for counting), privacy fences, log homes, etc. Focus on their other uses, then let them see how many things a tree can do. Maybe have saplings, then small trees, then go on a nature walk to point out larger ones, even find a low one for climbing, or point out tree houses. I know nut trees are not evergreens, but even talk about how they produce nuts, or even fruit trees, and share apple slices or nuts, oranges, etc that came from a tree.
