what would the Intel equivalent be?

Simple answer is NO! First off even the FX 6100/6200 and the FX 8120/8150 which both are 6 and 8 core processors do not beat the i5 2500k whereas the FX 4100 is way out off the league. The IPC count and the per core performance of the bulldozer is just not good enough when compared to i5 series or for that matter even the i3. The bulldozer is not a bad processor for gaming itself but it does not compare to Intels offerings. But then again Intel's processors cost twice that of AMD. So if you are on a budget trust me the FX wont disappoint. Also note: The FX 4100 offers the best price/performance ratio of all the bulldozer series.

Its okay. The older quad core Phenom 2 CPU's are actually about the same in terms of gaming when compared to the 4100. To be honest the Core i3 series is about the same as the Phenom 2 quad core when it comes to gaming. How do I know? I used to have a gaming rig based off a Phenom 2 975. It was great. But then I built a HTPC and used a Core i3-2100. The FPS were actually smoother all the while using a lower end graphics card. GT545 in the HTPC vs GTX570in my gaming rig. I've since upgraded to an i5-2500k in the gaming rig and now its the other way around. My gaming rig is faster in just about every game I play and I was even able to turn up the settings a little more. Of course this was last year. To be honest I'd wait till AMD gets it together. The next gen of AMD CPU's are actually supposed to be faster than there older generation this time.

I would suggest the fx-4170, 4.2ghz quadcore
And you can't really compare 2 CPUs based off of ghz, you need to note L cache, number of cores, motherboard compabality, and power drainage

The intel equilvet is the I7 series, alough all AMD fx cores can be overclocked, while only (I think) 2 or 4 intel models can be overclocked

The Phenom 965 X4 is way better for gaming, it's older but it still beats out the FX-4100 by a ton on benchmarks. Also, it's cheaper at 85 dollars. 965 Phenom OC'd is roughly equivalent to i5 2500k stock.

FX-4100 is basically a dual core, it's roughly equivalent to i3-2120 or somewhat behind i3-3310.
