I wish to teach myself basic web design so I can create a site for myself?

I am not a computer dummy, but neither am I a whiz. I want to create a website for my business that has a way of ordering services, paying for them, and posting weekly info for the public and more in depth updates and perhaps short videos every week for members.

What software do you suggest?
What books might help me design this?
Are there websites that might teach me some of this?

Incidentally, I am a graphic designer with substantial experience in using InDesign & Quark for print...

I would start with something simple like WordPress for making a simple website for your business that can also take orders.

There are also plenty of simple plugins for you to use as well.

There are a number of open-source shopping cart systems available free of charge which require no programming skills. ZenCart, Magento, OpenCart, are just a few names.

Do you currently have a domain name? If so, odds are the company you purchased it through offers hosting services along with the annual fee for domain ownership. NetFirms offers Simple Scripts which has several shopping cart programs available for free use. InMotion Hosting offers Softalicious which has about 12 shopping cart programs for easy installation.
