Alanine in solution exists as a zwitterion, a negative charge on the carboxylate portion and a positive charge on the amino portion. It is one of the three protons attached to the amino nitrogen that would be lost: CH3CH(NH3+)CO2-

Neither. An amino group in water soltion is basic, that is, it combines with any hydronium ions around.
