In Downton Abbey season 3, why does Bates' cellmate hate Bates? Ditto for that one guard. And what was?

that contraband that was planted in Bates' bunk? What was the contraband found in the cellmate's bunk? Did he get an extra year just for that contraband?

I think we're supposed to think that Bates is not a criminal and doesn't fit in. He also threatened the cellmate not to mess with him. His cellmate is in cahoots with the guard, running a smuggling ring inside the prison. They see Bates as threat because of his honesty.

It's a weak story. Downton is about everything other than the plot.

He hates him just because he hates him. No reason. The contraband was a plug of tobacco. I don't know about the extra year.

I checked previous episodes and couldn't come up with a reason. What's weird to me is that a few episodes back, they were trying to frame him. Now all of a sudden, even the wardens are telling him to 'watch his back'. Don't get it. He just needs to be freed. End of that storyline.
