Singing "Life of the Party" at 14 years old?

This Saturday, I am auditioning at the performing arts high school that I will be a freshman at next year. It is not an audition to get into the school (I am already in) they are just placing us in classes and groups for next year. For my vocal audition, I am singing "The Life of the Party" from the musical, The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa. I understand that the whole musical is very sexual and promiscuous, and that the character who sings the song is as well, but I understand the lyrics and really enjoy how my voice sounds singing it. I just want to know, is it inappropriate for me to be singing it at the age of 14 as an incoming freshman? The school's theatre program is amazing and that is what I am planning on doing later in life. Some of their past musicals have been Aladdin, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and this year they are doing Zombie Prom, just to give reference. Some of their plays have included Anne Frank, Hamlet, The Learned Ladies, and Shakespeare's Women. So.. If I'm being unclear, basically I'm worried that the teachers who are judging will think the song is too mature for me. If they didn't know my age, I could convincingly be about 17, so I think I will be able to pull it off. I'm pretty set on singing this song though. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks :)

I think that if you can pull the song off, it should be fine. While the show contains some pretty explicit content, the song doesn't. It is an absolute show stopper, and it's not really well-known either, so I actually think it's a great choice, if you have an amazing belt. It's a really hard song to sing well. That, honestly, would be my only misgiving about choosing Life of the Party, not the content. If you can sing it, though, go for it! It's much better than being the hundredth girl to sing "Popular" or "Own My Own."

I don't think that they're going to judge you because the character you are playing is a prostitute. That song that so many little girls sing for auditions, I Enjoy Being a Girl, is sung by a stripper in the original musical, after all, and nobody objects to that song. In any case, you are only playing a role - that is not you in real life.

Best of luck!
