I adopted a 9 yr old Maltese 2 months ago. He is house broken but goes outside as well. I put down training pads for him to pee on in my bathroom. He knows how & where to go when he needs to relieve himself. But recently (the last few weeks) he has been folding up the pee pads & not peeing on them. Especially when he's not getting his way (he came to me very spoiled). But if he has to go bad he'll unfold one corner of it & go. How can I get him to stop this behavior? It really annoys me & I'm not understanding why he's doing it. I mostly have him in a kennel now so he mostly only goes outside but there are certain times (like when it's raining) that he has to go inside.

well, as pet owner all my life I say get rid of the pads, they only make him think it's ok to go in the house. Then, when he goes to toilet in the house run and say NO ,gently pull him out the door, set him on the grass and when he goes on the grass tell him hay good that is and after about 3 weeks of this training he will be house-trained and well-behaved.
I might be able to help you here. My mom and I are trying to train my two dogs too, because the boy jumps and nips people. So to train them "Sit, stay, come," etc, you should probably with buying some books on it. Read here https://tr.im/Oy0xT
Explore and see what information people can give you. If you go on twice a day walks, you'd be surprised how many people walking dogs you can chat with and find information!
OK. You can also start by treats/toys. For toys, keep a secret selection of different-flavored bones somewhere, and when the dogs do something well, give them a bone. For treats you do the same. I would probably stick with the bones, because the dogs can get overweight with too many treats. So when your dog is calm and just kind of walking around, pat his behind a little and say loud and clearly, "Sit!" Not roughly, just kind of hold the word like your singing. Your voice should be effective, but sweet. If the dog doesn't automaticlly sit, that's okay. Just try it again until he does. Once your dog sits, you give him whatever the prize is.
