"Charter School" is a kind of high school. It operates on a "charter," which permits the school to make certain rules and operate in certain ways which are different from those expected of other "non charter" high schools within the school district. A community college is a "two year" college. The highest degree it offers is an "associate's degree." Community colleges generally have "open admissions," which means that a wide range of backgrounds qualify students to enroll. The word "college" by itself generally refers to a four year institution which offers bachelor's degrees. "Colleges" do not offer graduate programs leading to master's degrees or Ph. D. degrees. Those advanced degrees are only offered at "Universities." When people talk about a "state school," they usually mean a college or university which is supported by tax money, as opposed to a "private college" which depends on tuition. For example, in California, UCLA is a "state school" because taxes help pay for it. The University of Southern California ("USC") is a private school, and gets no tax money. Its tuition is higher, therefore.

High school, and college are different levels of education. The college is an upper level of education and it is after passing the high school that on gets into college.
