It doesn't recommend you use tap water but that's all I have. How do I get distilled water without buying jugs because that would be expensive

I usually just use the drinking water instead of distilled water for the same reason - expensive in the long run. Been doing that for the last 6 months and the humidifier is still running strong. Just remember to disinfect and clean the humidifer every week. I use diluted bleach solution to clean and disinfect.

There are several ways to make it, but you are basically going to boil your tap water and collect the steam that condensates on a surface placed above the boiling pot. Use ice over the top layer to cause a more immediate temperature change leading to greater condensation. I'll include a source with several options of how to do this.
