How do I get my stuff back from an eviction?

I unfortunetly was evicted from my apartment recently and I still have a few items let. Photos, clothes, dishes and small things like my military documents. I came back and found the locks changed. I checked the dumpsters around the area and did not find anything that was mine. I was just about to finish too. I live in Virginia and I hope some one can tell me if I still have a right to my property. Thanks for any help.

For residencal units they can not sell your stuff. Pay him the money and he will get your things back

They have to contact you by mail with a notice that they have your things, and that you can arrange to come and get them. They CAN NOT get rid of of them until you fail to contact them for about 8 days (depends on your state) after they notify you by mail. If you do contact them, you have 14 days to get your things.

Also, they can't lock you out unless they got a legal court order, and after 30 days have the sheriff come and evict you.

If they did lock you out illegally, I would call the sheriff and they probably have to let you back in.

This all depends on your state, so google "tenant landlord rights" in your state.

"Pay him the money and he will get your things back" - They can't hold your stuff hostage. If you owe them money, they can collect it other ways - but not by locking you out and keeping your things.
