how can i retrive my password on ubuntu?

so my mom had gotten mad at me because of a stupid reason and i was updating ubuntu to 12.10 and she came in my room and closed my laptop and corrupted it and started yelling at me like i killed someone so i had to reintall ubuntu 12.04 LTS but here's the problem, she set the password and she will not tell me the password because she says "i'm going to f*** up my computer" when all i was doing was updating so i asked if she could tell me the password and she refused... i'm really pissed because ubuntu makes you athenticate EVERYTHING. so if i wanna install skype, she has to come and put the password. you know what makes me even way more pissed, she didn't even buy the laptop, my grandfather did... she just used his money to buy it. i'm to afraid to tell her it's not hers and she did not buy it because she has anger issues... so, to the main poit of this. is there any way i can retrive my password?

chris d is right if you go through the backdoor you will change the password and she will know but the again who caress its your box www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/reset-your-forgotten-ubuntu-password-in-2-minutes-or-less/ this should still be relevent for 12.04. or you could just run a live version an a pendrive or another partition and you mother will never know...

It's not realistically possible to retrieve a password. (Yes, there are things like John The Ripper, but you need root access to run it.)

It *is* possible to reset the root password, though. See http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-recover-root-password-under-linux-with-single-user-mode/

The downside is that your mother will know you've reset it because it won't be what she thinks it should be.

If you're sufficiently experienced, you could use the methods described in the "recover the root password" link to gain root temporarily and create a new user account that also has uid 0 but isn't called "root".
